Silicone oil fan clutch is a new kind of transmission device using viscous shear force of silicone oil to transfer torque, which is widely used in engine cooling systems. It not only reduces the engine's fuel consumption, but also reduces the fan noise and the engine emissions when the engine starts.The structure and mechanics of silicone oil fan clutch are summarized in this paper, and a general mathematical model of torque transmission of silicone oil fan clutch is proposed by mechanical analysis of flat type, single groove and double groove silicone oil fan clutch. A mathematical model of oil return sensitivity is established based on the mechanical analysis of the oil return mechanism of silicone oil fan clutch. In order to get the maximum return pressure, the numerical relationship of the various prarmeters is presented. It provides a reference for the domestic manufacturers with the design of oil return mechanism of silicone oil fan clutch.A comparison method using the dimensionless performance curves of a fan is suggested to compare the performances of fans that are geometrically similar. The fan is designed and manufactured using the proposed comparison method and its performance is measured. The experiments show that the new fan meet the design requirements, which validates that the proposed comparison method and parameter selection method.A heat transfer model of silicone oil fan clutch is established by the thermal analysis and research of silicone oil fan clutch. Based on the torque balance (Transfer torque of the silicon oil fan clutch and driving torque of the fan) and heat transfer equilibrium of silicon oil fan clutch, a calculation program is compiled. Finally several silicon oil fan clutches are manufactured and their performances are measured. The test results show good agreement, which validates that the proposed matching design method of silicone oil fan clutch is simple and feasible.
