Robust design is an approach of modern design, which can enhance productperformance, decrease the fluctuation and guarantee the stability of product quality. Soit is wildly used in fields of aviation, mechanics and others. Robust design based onresponse surface methodology(RSM), is a prevailing and effective method, and theoptimal solution depends on the nature of objective function. By using regressionanalysis, the precise response relation between the objective function and theinfluencing factors, with good robustness, is obtained. In this paper, Taguchi RobustDesign and robust design based on RSM are applied to the structure design of FB30-18pneumatic pump, which is significant to increase the robustness. Specific study is as thefollowing:Firstly, it illustrates the status and development tendency of the method, and pointsout the significance of robust design used in FB30-18pneumatic pump.Secondly, it introduces the concept of robust design’s quality, its basic theory, itsaim, classification, procedure, application tools, data processing method, and theprocess and content of Taguchi Robust Design based on the experimental design.Thirdly, the factors influencing the efficiency of the pneumatic pump and the levelsof each factor are determined by actual production. By using Taguchi Robust Design,structure design and optimization design are processed, the best combination ofparameters gotten.Fourthly, robust design based on RSM is shown in the paper. FB30-18pneumaticpump is designed by this method. It has proved that the efficiency of the pump increases13.23percent,meanwhile, the fluctuation reduces and the quality is improved. The resultachieves the purpose of the robust design.
