Black start refers to the starting of a power system with its own power sources, without the assistance from external power supplies when a power black out occurs. Its own power sources must have the ability to perform black start. Once some stations have completed their black starts, they can be connected to the rest of the power network and assist in restoring non-black start stations to power. Because the recovery process after a power black out is very complex, to develop effective programs for black start is imperative to achieve relatively quick restoration of the power grid and reduce the impact to the power grid. The present situation of grid black start is introduced firstly in this paper. The important factors affecting the black start are analyzed, and the countermeasures are proposed. The theoretical analysis and simulation calculations are carried out secondly in this paper according to actual operation of Tibet Central Grid (hereinafter referred to as TCG). The black start power sources are determined in this part. TCG is divided into four sub-systems according to the grid structure and load distribution, namely Glaser grid, Xigaze grid, Shannan grid and Nyingchi grid. The reasonable black start paths are selected thirdly in this paper. The operation modes of AC and DC interconnection grid are discussed finally in this paper according to the power grid operation modes in the various black start programs.Currently Tibet Grid is transforming pattern toward "dispatching and control integration". The remote monitoring and unattended substations are progressively realized. It brings many more challenges to the future operation after a power failure. Some effective black start programs are obtained based on the reservoir studies for TCG black start process in this paper. They can provide reference and guidance for future operation after a power failure.
