A pump is a device that moves fluids or increase the pressure of fluids. Aboutone quarter of annual generating capacity is consumed on pump products. Among allpumps, double-suction pump has the advantage of simple structure, easy maintenance,higher lift, and it is widely used in mining, electric power, metallurgy, urban watersupply and sewage treatment. Therefore, the research on double suction pumpperformance optimization is of great practical significance. A series of concreteanalysis on the factors affecting the performance were accomplished.First, the OTS125-500double-suction centrifugal pump was investigated. Thethree-dimensional pump model was set up using software Creo and meshed usingICEM. FLUENT was then adopted to solve the three-dimensional turbulence flow inthe pump. Three kinds of turbulent model (Standard k-ε, RNG k-ε and Realizable k-ε)were studied and compared with experimental results. The Realizable k-ε model showsits superiority in the results and is select in the simulation. The detailed flowcharacteristics in the double-suction pump were then investigated, and someunreasonable flow regions were found and a specific optimal design on the impellerrunner was proposed. The efficiency at the design condition is raised by1.54%. The650SW double-suction centrifugal pump was then studied. For the model with orwithout the sealing ring, pump characteristics and the head and efficiency curves wereobtained. The importance of seal ring in the high flow rate double-suction pump wasindicated. The OTS300-700double-suction pump was investigated at last. Pumpcharacteristics at five flow rates were investigated. The pressure head and efficiencycurves under different cutting sizes are achieved and analyzed. The efficiency raised by1.9%at the design discharge and raised by2.12%at the large discharge when the cutthickness is8mm. The general trend after the triangle cutting is discovered and itprovides some useful guidance for the triangular cutting size in production activities.
