With the world’s aging process, the aging take tremendous pressures to Chinese economy, society and environment from the late1990s into the aging society. As China’s large population base, so we have most elderly population in the world, and need to make more effort to meet the challenge. To create a safe, comfortable, convenient for the elderly, with humane care of the living environment is conducive to improving their quality of later life, therefore, to solve the special needs of older people in the environmental field as the research source of this paper. For passive recreation, Xu Longfei,08grade postgraduate of school of design of Jiangnan University, make in-depth analysis and research from the angle of city public space at his master’s thesis design of public urban space based on passive recreation behavior. Due to deterioration of physical function of the elderly, not like the young adults to participate in high strength, high consumption of leisure activities, mainly in passive leisure style. Therefore, studying design for the living environment of the elderly population from the perspective of passive leisure becomes the research content of this paper. From the basic characteristics of the elderly population and passive leisure behavior, this paper discusses the elderly passive leisure behavior and environment, and for basic behavior of the elderly passive recreation, the corresponding design principles and methods were proposed. The paper consists of five parts. The first chapter describes the concept of the elderly, passive recreation and environmental design, and introduces the related theories and research situation at home and abroad. The second chapter discusses physiological characteristics and needs, psychological characteristics and needs, behavior characteristics and needs of the elderly. By analyzing the basic characteristics of the elderly population, to understand their specific needs, the foundation was built in order to further propose targeted elderly passive leisure environment. The third chapter mostly analyzes the behavior of the elderly population passive recreation, and discusses passive recreation and active leisure relationship, elderly passive leisure time and push factors. Passive recreation for elderly behaviors were summarized and divided into specific walks, communication, audio-visual, sit and rest, meditation five basic types of behavior. The fourth chapter, according to the location of the elderly passive leisure behavior, the residential architecture for the elderly, walking street, city square, park and the other, five types of environment can be summarized. From the research perspective of the passive leisure behavior of the elderly population, specifically elaborates the natural elements and human factors that can stimulate the elderly population passive leisure behavior. The fifth chapter focused on five basic types of elderly passive leisure behavior, proposes design principles and methods from micro-level. In the end of paper, the future of elderly population passive leisure environment was prospected, and the shortcomings of the paper were pointed out.
