It is of great significance to improve the operation efficiency of an urban rail station which is the basic unit of an urban rail transit system. Owing to the inadequate research on the comprehensive evaluation of the operation efficiencies of urban rail stations, this study focuses on station operation, facility management and train transport organization to newly establish an evaluation framework with the indicies of walking and waiting time of a passenger. Moreover, new optimization methods are proposed to improve the operation of different types of urban rail stations and their different service areas. Case studies have also been made for the comprehensive operation improvements.First, the optimization methods are proposed to improve the operation of untransfer station. The method is disscused in two points, the streamline and connection outside station, the streamline inside station. With evaluating of walking time of passenger, the streamline and connection outside station will be optimized by changing bus stop, improving connection facilities and limiting passenger volume. With evaluating of walking and waiting time of passenger, the streamline inside the station will be optimized by matching the facility capacity and passenger flow in space and time.Besides the optimization methods of untransfer station, the operation of transfer station is optimized by timetable which can reduce the transfer waiting time of passenger. On the basis of transfer coordination research, this study proposes a new transfer waiting time model in which transfer volume and train load factor are considerd. An algorithm with solving several transfer directions of one station is also designed. Finally, this study illustrate the model with real stations from Beijing Subway system. During morning peak hours, the walking times of passenger outside Nanshao station and Shahe station have reduced by19.56%and21.32%respectively, the walking time of passenger inside Shahe station has reduced by11.15%. Xierqi is a transfer station. Outside Xierqi station, the walking times of passenger getting in and out reach a reduction of7.23%and12.43%. The transfer waiting time inside it has decreased8.18%. What’s more, the transfer waiting time has decreased17.06%during flat hours.
