Multimodal transport is not only the advanced stage but also an inevitable trend of modern transportation development. So many countries consider it as a priority in the future development of multimodal transportation. Therefore, it is imperative to research the multimodal transport process, which can promote the development of multimodal transport and achieve optimal logistics services. This paper analyzed multimodal transport from the concept, operation mode, superiority and development of domestic and foreign. Multimodal transport process which is the process that the participants produced a series of physical and information operations during the flow of goods.Multimodal transport process which involves many factors, subjects, variables, and thus need to be hierarchical description, detailing the activity process of the main participants in the multimodal transport system, express logistics, documents flow, information flow between them step by step.According to its characteristics like complex business process, multy subject involving, and information interaction, several common modeling methods were compared. After the comparison, Petri net based on the hierarchical coloring time was used in this paper. A Petri net of the rail-sea multimodal transport was founded. The model structure was proved to be reasonable and correct by the calculation of incidence matrix. Then the reorganization algorithm was employed to get each sub nets and confirm the Synchronization relationships between each sub nets. As a result the key node affecting the process efficiency was detected, thus the corresponding optimization measures were put forward. The improvement of sub net efficiency could lead to the optimization of the whole process. ExSpect software was used to do the simulation research of the optimized Petri nets model. Comparing the model simulation data before and after the optimization, the parallel link was added into the optimized new business process which shortened the cycle time and improved the execution efficiency.
