Based on the second-line ship lock construction project of Zhuzhou navigation powerjunction in Xiangjiang River, the hydraulic characteristics of unsteady flow during lockfilling and emptying in approach channel were analyzed by a3-D numerical model. Theresearch result provides technical support for choosing reasonable arrangement ofapproach channel and for the operation management of the second-line ship lock. Italso provides valuable experience for similar engineering. The results show that thehydraulic characteristics of unsteady flow during lock filling and emptying in approachchannel are not only similar to that of single line ship lock, but also have distinctiveproperties. It embodies in following aspects: When the ship lock is in operation alone, because the water body is larger, the water level fluctuation caused by water filling ofunsteady flow and the longitudinal velocity are small. But in the process of water filling, the water flow movements in approach channel of the second-line ship lock have a greatinfluence on each other, which is mainly manifested as larger cross flow in the middle ofthe channel. When the double ship locks are running at the same time, the water levelfluctuation and flow rate are large due to the wave superposition. In order to reduce theinfluence of the unsteady flow during lock filling and emptying on the navigationcondition in approach channel, the stagger time for the second-line ship lock was putforward, and it was also proposed that the waterproof wall should be set between theapproach channels of the second-line ship lock.
