Container Crane is the key equipment in modern port, butcontainer cranes are all working in open air environment and theworking conditions are very poor, which often leads to the equipmentprone to failure, damage, etc. So it needs to monitor the containercrane’s working state real-timely. CMS (Crane Management System)is a monitoring system installed on the container crane in modernports, which can real-time monitor the crane’s operating status andreveal the failure information. However, CMS couldn’t monitor thestress status of container crane’s metal structure in it’s operatingprocess currently. On the other hand, wire ropes are the keycomponents of container crane system and are easy to become fatiguefracture, which will leads to huge disaster, so the remaining fatiguelife of wire ropes needs to be predicted. Based on the aboveconsiderations, a method of on-line visualizing the crane’s stress statebased on CMS while in its working process and predicting theremaining fatigue life of wire ropes according to the wire’s life wasstudied.Firstly, the method of analysis the stress status of containercrane’s metal structure and wire ropes in different working conditionswas researched. The CAD model of container crane’s metal structureand wire ropes was constructed and then the stress status in differentworking conditions was calculated to provide support for the follow-up work.Secondly, the fatigue life of wire rope based on the stress resultswas researched, a method of analysis the wire rope’s fatigue lifebased on the relationship between the number of broken wires andthe wire rope’s fatigue life. By theoretical calculations, the wire’sS-N curve and the fatigue load spectrum of wire rope is provided. Inthe use of Workbench, first analysis the wire’s fatigue life and thenanalysis the wire rope’s fatigue life.Thirdly, the method of stress on-line calculation and visualizationwas researched. The virtual container crane system doing the sameoperation follows up the real container system by reads the operationdata from CMS system and then the visualization system calculatesthe metal structure’s stress real-timely and map to color to dynamicvisualization while in container crane’s working process.Lastly, a “Crane Operation Simulation and Online VisualizationSystem” prototype system is developed and applied to visualize thestress status of crane’s metal structure and wire ropes while in crane’soperation process, which can also display the number of containerbox that has been done by wire ropes and the remaining containerbox that is equal to the remaining fatigue life of wire rope. Thisvisualization system can be used to visualize the stress status ofcontainer crane system in a intuitive way for container crane’smaintenance engineers, thus can be used to offer additional usefulinformation for the maintenance of container crane.
