Commercial complex is the main region to show modern business culture, city’sstyle and features, modern life, becoming an integral part of modern cities. The functionof the commercial complex is no longer limited to be a commodity space to purchaseand sale, but also extend to satisfy every substance and inspirit living field, such as thematerial and spiritual communication of people, leisure and entertainment, turning intoa kind of comprehensive reflection of modern city life.Intermediary space as a transitional space of the commercial complex and urbanspace, enriching the space hierarchy, can provide material support for people’s demandto a variety of activities. Through the interaction between the city and architecture, itcan increase the vitality of space and make people’s communication activities moreprosperous. Its advantages and disadvantages have a direct impact on the commercialcomplex whether it can satisfy the behavior and psychological needs of people.Based on the research of environmental behavior theory, the paper discusses thecommercial complex intermediary space from three aspects: concepts, classification andspatial structure, taking the crowd who use the intermediary space as the main researchobject, taking Xi’an and the surrounding areas as the scope of the study. And then doesin-depth research and analysis on the human behavior of the representative commercialcomplex intermediary space, mainly by the observation research on people’s behavior,the use of space and other aspects, and the questionnaire survey and analysis of thepsychological feeling of people.Through the analysis of survey data, making the POE for the intermediary space, the paper has a more systematic evaluation of space. Then summarizes the three typesof typical activities, including the necessity activity, spontaneous activities and socialactivities, and analyze the characteristics of people in the intermediary space. And thenanalyze the relationship between the behavior and psychology of people and theelements of intermediary space, such as space interface elements, service facilities andlandscape elements. And then put forward the comprehensive requirements of peoplepsychological needs to the intermediary space: space accessibility, comfort, privacy andhistorical continuity. Finally, according to the theory analysis and research summary ofXi’an commercial complex intermediary space, proposes the design strategy and methodto meet the psychological needs of people, such as the psychological demand of comfort,privacy, sense, identity and the demands of different activities and full-time spaceexperience.Finally, the implementation of theory with practice, combined with engineeringproject to explore the implementation of the intermediary space design method.
