The design of mountainous highway interchange involves many sides and has an integralnature; it is therefore a difficult job. Although domestic and foreign interchanges have beendeveloped for decades, the design theory of interchanges also has been established anddeveloped gradually, it is immature and incomplete, and still greatly lags behind the theory ofhighway route design. Mountainous areas have characteristics of complex terrain, big groundelevation difference, frequent change, steep natural slope, widely distributed unfavorablegeology and special lithological layer, complex type selection of interchange. So it is verynecessary and urgent to continue developing design theory of mountainous highwayinterchange. The paper mainly studies the layout and type selection of mountainous highwayinterchange, which is the core content of interchange design.The article firstly introduces common types and applicable conditions of highwayinterchange by sorting and analyzing foundation type and characteristics of highwayinterchange ramp pattern. Combining with the layout of mountainous highway interchanges,it puts forward the basic principles of selecting type of mountainous highway interchangefrom the following several aspects, such as the function of interchanges in road network,traffic prediction, traffic safety, geography adaptability, life cycle cost and the principle ofpeople first, etc. Then, it summarizes the type selection and comparison of mountainoushighway interchanges. Finally, the author takes two mountainous highway interchangeprojects in the northeast and east of Guangdong province as example, and makes furtheranalysis of the type selection and comparison of mountainous highway interchanges in theaspects of traffic prediction, section selection, horizontal and longitudinal alignment design,structure layout, quantity statistics and economic and technical comparison. Through theabove studies, the paper hopes to provide helps for design of mountainous highwayinterchanges.
