In the 1920s, thermal power plants put a large number of pulverized-coal fired boilers into use, so a large number of matched reinforced concrete chimneys were built up. While monocular reinforced concrete chimney is a kind of form, which has been widely applied. With the development of Chinese economy, many construction units to expand overseas chimney market. We need to Pay attention to that there is a big difference between Chinese and American codes in structural design. As a kind of specification geared to the international standards, American codes are adopted by many countries. While, contrast with foreign codes, it is contribute to understanding our country’s codes, finding its shortcoming and deficiencies and providing a reference for modification.Based on Code for Design of Chimney (GB 50003-2013)、 Code for Design of Concrete Structures (GB 50010-2010). Code for Seismic Design of Buildings (GB 50011-2010)、 Load Code for the Design of Building Structures (GB 5009-2012). Code for Reinforced Concrete Chimneys (ACI307-08). Code for Design of Concrete Structures (ACI318-05) and Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structure (ASCE7-2002). This paper gives comparative analysis of codes for design of monocular reinforced concrete chimneys and calculation method between Chinese and American. And through examples demonstrate the difference in the method of chimney design and the result of calculation. The main contexts are as follows:Firstly, in this paper, it gives comparative analysis of material properties and design method between Chinese and American chimney codes. By comparison, the codes for chimney’s material properties are similar, but there is a certain difference in design method.Secondly, in this paper, it compares the difference in the method of load calculation between Chinese and American codes. By comparison, both two countries are all adopt multiple parameter forms to indicate wind loads and earthquake action. The main parameters considered are basically identical, but still have differences. Different distance measurement is the main reason that makes the basic wind speed values different. Chinese code without considering the impact of site category for maximum response spectrum, while American code does not consider the additional bending moment calculation. There are many different factors between Chinese and American, such as wind load, the parameter choice of seismic action and load partial coefficient. All these factors make the two codes in computational load force on the chimney has no comparable value.Finally, in this paper, it compares the calculation method of the normal section bearing capacity. By comparison, Chinese calculation formula is more comprehensive than the Americans. The main reason is Chinese code needs to consider the situation of tensile region of holes and the different sizes of holes, but neither the American.
