Electricity production as the basic equipment, generators play a vital role in security and stability of the entire power system. The rotor is the core component of a large turbo generator, in normal operation is always in high-speed rotation state, bear a great deal of heat load and mechanical stress, in addition to poor rotor coupled with the manufacturing process of the process, they would often turn the rotor windings between turns and insulation damage, cause a short circuit between the rotor windings. So for the entire rotor fault detection is particularly important.Firstly, from the manufacture and operation, a detailed analysis of inter-turn short circuit fault cause large turbine generator rotor winding, pointing out that bad manufacturing process and damage the insulation area is the main cause of the short circuit fault between the rotor windings. Through the maintenance of the inter-turn short circuit rotor in Zou County Power 1000MW unit, the study examines the various types of traditional detection methods about the inter-turn short circuit fault at home and abroad, summarizes the characteristics and shortcomings, while the more advanced among other current turn short circuit tests the method of theoretical analysis.Secondly, this paper analyzes the generator rotor magnetic potential under normal and fault conditions of the distribution, and the mechanism and MMFs rotor short-circuit failure were studied to analyze the feasibility of the practical application of the theory of differential coil waveform. After more research and analysis on the theory and practice between the rotor windings short circuit fault, known to the differential coil waveform based on the theory of differential coil dynamic testing method the influence of external conditions and the location is less inter-turn short circuit fault detection reliability high. Combined with the enterprise’s actual production, Zou County power plant based on the purchase of the Inter-American theory of differential coil waveform generator’s rotor windings of turbogenerator short circuit test system that can accurately determine the presence of inter-turn short circuit dynamically, and can accurately determine the fault slot position, in the current actual plant operation, and achieved good results.
