In the vertical ship lift’s design process, in order to reduce the power of ship lift electric dragging system and reduce the project cost, on the premise of meet the design ship dimensions and freight volume, it always puts the ship reception chamber size and compartments inside to minimize the depth of the water, so the ship lift reception chamber section coefficient is very small, commonly ships came in and out of the ship reception chamber of the blocking effect is very obvious, water surface fluctuation is very significant, hull would rise or fall as happened. If the sinking amount exceeds the ship reception chamber of the depth of the water safety margin, it would cause the ship grounding accident and endanger the ship safety and safe operation of the ship lift.In this paper, a ship lift in Yangzi river was chose as the research object, based on the numerical simulation software FLUENT, through the establishment of the ship came in and out of the ship reception chamber to mathematical model of the process, using the RNG k ~ epsilon double equations turbulence model, using the VOF method to track free surface, and through the C language to write the UDF program to define the motion of the ship. Different ship speed and ship compartments are simulated water depth, ship in and out of the ship reception chamber within the water in the process of movement, this paper got the following conclusion:① In the two different process of ship coming in and out of ship reception chamber, water surface fluctuation condition presents different features: In the process of ship coming out of the ship reception chamber, water surface’s reduction value is greater than the water surface’s rising value, and in the process of ships sailed into ship reception chamber, water surface’s rising value is greater than the water surface’s reduction value. The process of ship coming out of the ship reception chamber is the controlling conditions of the water surface’s reduction value, and the process of ship coming in the ship reception chamber is the controlling conditions of the water surface’s rising value.② In the process of ship coming out of the chamber, the influence of a change in the ship’s velocity to the water surface’s reduction value is greater than the influence of the change in the chamber water depth. But both the change in the ship’s velocity and the chamber water depth to the influence of the water surface’s rising value are limited. In the process of ship coming into chamber, the influence of a change in the ship’s velocity to the water surface’s rising value is greater than the influence of the change in the chamber water depth. Comparing with the process of ship coming out of the chamber, the change in ship’s velocity and the water depth to the influence of water reduction value is limited.In the process of ship coming out of the chamber, water fluctuation will lead to the sinking, maximum subsidence is closely related to the ship’s velocity. In the case of ensure ship reception chamber surplus water depth, there is a corresponding ship’s safe velocity. Through to the ship’s safe velocity under different cross section coefficient polynomial fitting, we can conclude the ship’s safe velocity.
