With the rapid development of the construction of highway traffic, the traffic safety problems become one of the key object of the social focus on. The highway tunnel as an important section of highway traffic, if the traffic accident occurs, it will affects the driving of vehicles and even lead to paralysis of the entire road traffic network. Therefore, assured the running safety of the highway tunnel is very important to the stable development of society and economy. In view of the increasing importance of traffic safety and the improvement of highway tunnel monitoring system, it will be of great significance to set up an evaluation system of highway tunnel safety through the method of intelligent control, so that can reduce the workload and the difficulty of staff, help drivers to obtain the security situation of the tunnel in a timely.Therefore, this article focuses on the research of traffic safety status evaluation of the highway tunnel. Firstly, interprets the definition and characteristics of the not yet mature concept of traffic safety status, and explains the traffic safety status in the application of road traffic safety evaluation. Then, introduces accident and harm of the highway tunnel, and introduces the common index of the traffic safety evaluation of tunnel. According to the classification of the existing road evaluation method, determines the classification standard of traffic safety status of highway tunnel.Based on the analysis of the traffic safety characteristics of the highway tunnel, the characteristic parameters of the traffic safety status of the highway tunnel has been studied. Firstly, compares the actual traffic flow of tunnel with the vissim simulation of traffic flow, make sure that using the vissim traffic simulation to simulate the accident of the tunnel is feasible, it solves the problem of the data acquisition difficulty of the tunnel traffic accident, which provides the data for the research of traffic accident. Then, analysis the traffic flow of tunnel accident, confirms that the change of traffic environment can reflect on the traffic flow parameters, so as to determines the characteristic parameters of the traffic safety status of the highway tunnel.On the basis of the characteristic parameters, the evaluation methods of traffic safety status of highway tunnel has been studied. The paper establish two models, one is based on fuzzy c-means algorithm,the other one is based on the neural network pattern recognition. Through the evaluation results of the traffic safety status of the actual state of tunnel of the two models, analyzes the advantages and the disadvantages of these two model. The results show that, using the fuzzy c-means algorithm to establish the evaluation model has the advantages of classifying data automatically, however, this method needs a large amount of data, and has the defect of trapping into a local optimal solution; using the neural network pattern recognition method to establish evaluation model, give full play for people’s subjective initiative, make a higher accuracy of evaluation results, but compares with the previous method, is lack of the convenience of automatic classification.
