In the construction of dam, flood discharge and energy dissipation facilities occupy very important position. It is used to drain the excess amount of water which the reservoir can’t accommodate to ensure the safety of water retaining, discharge and other relevant structures. Tunnel spillway, a new flow discharge form which is commonly used in the high narrow terrain, cost low and have stable flow pattern. It have both the advantage features of spillway and tunnel. As the application scope of tunnel-spillway expanding in the northwest area, it will be an important research focus of water conservancy workers. The hydraulic characteristics of tunnel-spillway are studied based on the model test and numerical simulation in this paper, Achievements have the following points:1. The author have introduced the research significance and status of tunnel-spillway in the water conservancy project, sum up the commonly used forms of energy dissipation and main hydraulic characteristics research methods, analyzes hydraulic characteristics of tunnel-spillway.2. A practical project is used to research tunnel-spillway through model test. The paper have introduced the design principle and production process of physical model and gets the strength of tunnel-spillway’s flow ability, the distribution of tunnel-spillway’s on-way water surface lines, pressure value and velocity after analyzing the results, Its’downstream apron segment was studied by anti-scour schemes.3. The flow pattern of tunnel-spillway is simulated by fluid simulation software FLUENT, getting the distribution of tunnel-spillway’s hydraulic parameters and results are compared with physical model test, proved that numerical model can simulate tunnel-spillway’s flow state well. To some extent, it can be applied to engineering practice.Testing results show that tunnel-spillway’s flood discharge capacity and other hydraulic characteristics are good, successfully solved the problem of flood discharge and reduce the impingement of downstream energy dissipation which is verified by conducting numerical simulation. The study provides a theoretical basis for the application of tunnel spillway in the future and contains certain academic significance and engineering application value.
