In recent years, there are more and more interests for the voyage in ice-covered waters, such as the arctic waters with abundant oil and gas resources. It needs the large transport ships that can voyage in the ice region. Nonetheless, the designing experience of this kind of ship is lacking. IACS and the classification societies are trying to make a reasonable standard of polar ship design to complete the structure optimization and construction of the polar ship. However, So far, the operating experiences of large ship in arctic waters are still lack. The detailed interaction process between ship and sea ice still cannot be understand. So, it is necessary to acquire the detailed enough information that describes the interaction between the ship and ice process through the simulation study. It can be used to assist the research of structure optimization and construction of the polar ship. This paper mainly researches the interaction process of arctic tanker and sea ice. The main contents include:1. The introduction about the research status related to arctic and the related standards, and the detailed expounding of the status of arctic sea ice, arctic passage and the sailing economy.2. The delving into the ice load calculation method, expounding of the interaction scenario between ice and ship and the nonlinear finite element simulation method, and particularly introduction of the ice load model based on principle of energy balance.3. Ice strengthening to ordinary tanker according to the tanker major parameters and the "Requirements Concerning Polar Class" of International Association of Classification Societies, the establishments of the bow-sea ice collision finite element model and ship-sea ice collision finite element model, and the determinations of solving parameters and corresponding working conditions.4. The detailed description of the interaction process between ship and sea ice, the condition of stress, strain and deformation, and the changes of energy in the process of interaction. Explorations of the effect of impact angle, impact velocity, impact location and sea-ice area in the collision process.
