In recent years, with the continuous development of our ports, competition is more and more fierce, and the phenomenon of hinterland overlapping becomes more serious. It is very essential for a port to clearly determine the range of hinterland it can attract and know the evolution trend of its hinterlands well. This will also be of great significance for future development of both the port and its hinterlands. However, there are some limitations in the existing port hinterland segmentation methods. These limitations lead that achieving an accurate and detailed segmentation of port hinterland becomes almost impossible by using these methods. Besides, studies on the evolution of port hinterland are still very scarce. All these aspects are not conducive for the port to determine the direction of its development.Atfirst, thisthesisintroducestheconcept of Big Bohai Circle and defines the scope of it in detail. Dalian Port, Yingkou Port, Qinhuangdao Port, Tianjin Port, Qingdao Port, Yantai Port, Dandong Port and Rizhao Port are chose as the eight objects of study. Secondly, existing port hinterland segmentation methods are divided into two types according to the number of considering factors. Then on the basis of summarizing the weak points of each method, with the introduction of plume model and some appropriate improvement, this paper proposes a new method for partitioning port hinterlands——hinterland plume model. Next, the scopes of port hinterland under Big Bohai Circle in four different time points are clearly divided by using this method, and come to the conclusion of segmentation. Through the analysis of evolution characteristics, the evolution trend of port hinterland under Big Bohai Circle can be summarized as following:The hinterland scopes of Tianjin Port and Yantai Port will fluctuate within a narrow range on the basis of stability; The hinterland scopes of Yingkou Port, Rizhao Port and Dandong Port are expected to expand further; The hinterland scopes of Dalian Port, Qinhuangdao Port and Qingdao Port may continue to shrink. At last, thisthesis proposes some relative strategies replying to the evolution of port hinterland under Big Bohai Circle from three aspects of national government, local government and industry.
