Research On Performance Evaluation Of Construction Project Under EPC Mode

In recent years, Chinese construction enterprises develop fast. An increasing number of them are undertaking large-scale construction projects, among which most of them use the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) construction method, which is also very popular and accepted in the international market. By undertaking EPC projects, Chinese enterprises not only accumulate a lot of construction and management experience in the domestic market, but also go abroad and gain some ground in the global market.Scholars in China as well as the rest of the world have been concerned about the research of the EPC method for a long time already. Therefore a large number of research and discussions about the risk management, procurement management, cost management and contract management of EPC projects is conducted by them. As one of the most important steps in project management, performance management and performance evaluation is critical in EPC project management and has a high research value. And a complete evaluation procedure and evaluation system is also need to built for EPC project now. This thesis offers a deep research about construction project performance evaluation under the EPC method. It aims at building a standard, scientific and reasonable performance evaluation system, as well as an integrated and well-organized performance evaluation procedure. This procedure must correspond to the whole process of engineering, procurement and construction in a project, and evaluate the performance of the different phases of a project in a clear and complete way. In reality, the engineering, procurement and construction of an EPC project, even the whole project management process needs such academic research to enhance the level of project management.In this thesis, the theories of Project Performance Management, EPC projects and Key Performance Indicator are taken as the research foundation. Many research methods such as literature research, expert interview, Delphi method, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Fuzzy Comprehensive Evaluation method are also used. The research begins with the industrial standard of project performance management, supported by a large number of related literature. It builds a basic EPC project performance evaluation indicator system from that. In addition, interviews with experts in academic and practical fields and the analytical method of Delphi are used, together with detailed quantity methods, to build the Key Performance Indicator system for EPC projects. These indicators of different steps and phases are also given weights by using AHP methods. In the end, the thesis evaluates the performance of the whole project as well as the performance of the different project phases with the use of the Fuzzy Comprehensive Evaluation method and radar chart, together with a real example to test and verify the whole process. Thereby, the research builds a complete performance evaluation system and model for EPC construction projects, which begins with the selection of evaluation indicators and ends with a performance evaluation conclusion.
