Study On The Characteristic Townscape Image Of Xining City Based On The View Of New Cultural Geography

China is in a rapid urbanization period and, much of the research suggests that city construction in China is imitating the phenomenon of developed countries or developed cities, which is the blind pursuit of taller buildings and bigger cities while ignoring the particular-characteristics of a locality. In the process of this urban construction, distinctive cultural heritage landscape is destroyed, the historical context is dissipated, and local characteristics are down played. The culture, customs, society also plays in the same way, "thousand cities seems alike" phenomenon is becoming more serious.Xining has rich cultural resources such as religious culture, immigrant culture, plateau culture, contemporary culture, ancient culture and unique natural resources such as its climate and mountains. The urbanization of Xining has reached 70%, the construction speed is such that the city has a "different look each day". However, in the process of construction, these resources are not recognized by builders, including government and constructors. In the rush to fill the ground and the sky with a batch of featureless "boxes", more and more precious historical relics are swept away, the cultural awareness and the protection of historic consciousness is almost non-existent, causing the lack of self-confidence, identity and sense of belonging.New cultural geography emphasizes heed to the research process of landscape and how the landscape affects different individuals or groups, and also considers people’s subjective initiative and expectations. Spatial distribution is not be the primary consideration of a city’s landscape, but, rather more attention is given to the easily neglected “cultural” landscape. For a city like Xining, which has rich cultural and historical resources, it is more suitable to apply the concepts of new cultural geography in the planning and construction of the characteristic landscape, thus proving the practical significance of this sub-discipline.Based on the understanding of those theories and the geographical environment, historical track and development of Xining city, this article analyzes the characteristics of landscape in Xining from three elements: natural landscape, artificial landscape and historical social cultural landscape. To be specific, this article studies the formation, characteristics and the interpretation of the landscape. Then through a form of a questionnaire survey on landscape characteristic style of cognition, the main investigation of Xining city landscape characteristic style and features of the overall cognition, evaluation and expectation. Based on this, three aspects to shape the characteristics of landscape in Xining city which are natural landscape "humanization", artificial landscape "cultural" and the social historical and cultural landscape "viable" are put forward.
