In recent years, with the rapid economic and urbanization of China, the level of urbanization and population is expanded rapidly. The problem of city transportation has been growing. It has been commonly recognized that the public traffic is key to relax traffic pressure of urban. Meanwhile, after 100 years dreariness, with the comprehensive technical upgrading, modern tram comes upon the stage of history starting anew to improve the urban transportation. Compared with the traditional public transportation vehicles, modern tram is a new type which has good appearance, many elements in technical equipment, higher speed, more comfortable space and quick transfer riding strategy. At present, in many cities of China, modern tram has been planning and constructing. However, compared with social vehicle, bus, Light Railway Transit and others, tram has its own unique driving characteristics. Especially, fit signal control methods at intersection have important significance for guaranteeing higher speed, improving the service level and reducing passengers’ delay.First,the concept of modern tram and urban traffic signal control theory have a thorough study; in order to obtain effective tram’s information to complement transit signal priority control strategy at intersection, vehicle detection techniques of signal priority are studied in thesis, and according to the working principle of inductive loop vehicle detection technology, the hardware circuit of inductive loop vehicle detection is designed. Combined with hardware,its software is designed through the functional requirement analysis of the system. Then, as the key contents of the thesis, signal priority control strategies at intersection are designed for tram. The strategies include two types: passive and actives. And, the strategies go into particulars. For giving signal priority to tram at intersection, active type is the most point in thesis. The active type has four executive ways, which includes absolute priority, full priority, partial priority and adaptive priority. And the active strategy’s control logic and flow are detailedly designed and described. Meanwhile, the thesis makes a deep research on the located position of inductive loop vehicle detection and gives some examples of the different signal control strategies.By researching signal priority control strategies of tram, and considering the study cost, time and the feasibility, simulation is chosen as research method in the thesis. Through the theory study, based on the fixed time signal control strategy, and under different transverse traffic volume, different co-rotating traffic volume and tram’s volume, the thesis presents a simulation result about time of delay of active signal priority strategy of modern tram, which includes absolute priority, full priority and partial priority, at single-point intersection by using VISSIM software. Through the comprehensive comparative analysis of the delay of tram and social vehicles judges the scope of application of signal priority control strategies, and which signal control strategy is the optimum under different simulating situations. Finally, the research induces conclusions and propositions to be applied in real intersection.
