Today, with the improvement of people’s living standards and the increase of private cars, the already crowded cities often appear the phenomena of road congestion, travel difficulties and traffic accidents. The phenomena bring a heavy burden, and also restrict the development of the cities. The current traffic control method did not alleviate these problems, so it is essential to develop a new traffic control technology to solve the traffic congestion and to reduce the parking traffic delay time. This paper presents a dual-mode control traffic control technology combines timing control and intelligent control to solve the problems of traffic flow saturation and unsaturation.Through the analysis of the current traffic control technology, according to the characteristics of road traffic, combining with the most advanced computer technology, network communication technology and embedded technology, a dual-mode traffic control system is developed with the core chip of ARM 11 S3C6410. This system mainly collect the real-time traffic information via the Ethernet transmission to the microprocessor, and through calculating and processing to determine the status of the current traffic intersection, so that two control methods (dual-mode) can switch automatically. The system has characteristics of real-time traffic detection, long-distance transmission, control mode automatic switching as well as data processing. It can effectively improve the traffic capacity of the intersection and ease traffic congestion, making up for the deficiency of a single control method.According to the content of the research topic, this paper divided the dual mode control system into two parts:hardware and software. The hardware is mainly the design of extension interface circuit, including power and clock module, debug module and other interface circuits. The software part includes erecting operating system platform, the design and implementation of fuzzy control algorithm, as well as the development of the timing control algorithm.Finally, through the MATLAB simulations, the advantage of the proposed traffic control system which combined the timing control and the fuzzy control together has been verified, compared to the single traffic control method. It also shows that the proposed method can reduce the intersection of vehicles waiting time, the road share and improve the capacity of the road.
