In recent years, there’re unending emergence of various design competitions targeting atthe students majoring in Architecture and the relevant specialties. These competitions haveattracted increasing international participants and assessors; among whom, many Chinesestudents are also proactively engaged in. The internationalization of competitions and thecompletion-oriented international educational exchanges have become the inevitable trend inthe development of architectural design competitions for students, thus bringing aboutopportunities and posing unprecedented challenges to the architectural education in China. In this sense, the paper takes the architectural design competition for students as theresearch objective so as to explore the examination tendency and creation method of thecompetitions, compare the differences of domestic and international college students incompetition creation and puts forward the suggestions for the current competition model andarchitectural education, thus possessing positive theoretical significance and applicationvalues. The paper is divided into6chapters with the main body consisting of four chapters andincluding two parts. The first half of the paper (Chapter2) reviews the development course of both thedomestic and international architectural design competition, summarizes the features anddevelopment trend and sorts out the general situation of both the domestic and internationalcompetitions over the past five years. Therefore, it is of significance reference values. The latter part (Chapter3~5) pays more attention to the thinking process and expressionof the students from architecture universities in the process of their creation so as to gain abetter understanding of the creation differences of these students and the creation process fromconception to expression in architectural design competitions. The paper analyzes the themeresponse, concept generating, design strategies and expression methods of the11award-winning works in international students’competitions from2008to2012. The results ofthe comprehensive analysis show that,1. Most of the11works are inspired by the culturalconcepts. Concrete concept, generally speaking, echoes with the architectural modeling;however, abstract concept, in most cases, responds to the architectural functions andhumanistic environment, thus exerting indirect influence on the modeling;2. Chinese students, who are more sensitively-oriented, prefer regional cultural concepts and non-regional naturalconcepts, especially the concrete concepts; however, foreign students, with more reasonableminds, are inclined to non-regional concepts, abstract concepts in particular;3. Muchimportance has been attached to skills by Chinese students, who adopt different expressionmethods in equal frequency; however, foreign students adopt the fixed model in drawingexpression in high frequency;4. There are no significant differences between theme responseand design strategies in Chinese and foreign students.
