Based on the study of the development of Chinese architectural culture in reform and opening to the west completely for 20 years, this paper discusses the reforming phenomena of Chinese architectural culture during the transitional period of economy. It also analyses the forming of the architectural designing industry when the economy shift from planned system to market-oriented ones and considers both of its positive and negative influence into architectural culture. Besides, the author affirms the progress of architectural culture in China and points out certain flaws in process of revolution as well.CHAPTER ONE: Through the introduction of the history of "imitation" and "creation", the author analyses the strength trial of imitation and creation in seek of Chinese contemporary architecture during the transitional period of economy. According to several convincing examples, the paper suggests that only progress in architecture should be regarded as the convincible criterion of "creation".CHAPTER TWO: To analyze the introduction of foreign theories in classified statistics and its influences on both theoretical and practical field of Chinese architecture; to establish a rational theory for the introducing system; to have a good judgment on future Chinese architectural theory which is going to be more independent.CHAPTER THREE: Indicating the group characters and design styles between the second and the third generation of Chinese architects, the paper compares Chinese architects contributed significantly to Chinese architectural culture during the transitional period of economy. Enrich this comparative involution in light of the experience of some contemporary young foreign architects.CHAPER FOUR: To analyze Beaux-Arts entirely, the author indicates that nowadays Chinese architectural education, which originated from Beaux-Arts, faces a lot of challenges in a blank new situation as followings: 1) the enrollments shift from art students to scientific ones 2) whether the architecture is a kind of craftsmanship or a real academic subject 3) CAD as a double-edged sword 4) the passive basic education is stroked by a positive top education 5) the necessity and possibility of technology education. At last the paper predicts a plural situation of global architectural education and a probable system in China as a result of the break of Beaux-Arts.CHAPTER FIVE: Phenomena of "officer-orientation", "form-orientation", and "tradition-orientation" have already existed in Chinese architectural designing environment for a long time. Considering arguments about The National Grand Theatre, the paper questions the validity of innovation in such elements. The article also holds that in order to improve the designing level, architects should collaborate actively with various sides of contradiction and be sensitive enough to new development in global architecture.
