Compared with the rapid economic growth, India’s electric power developm ent is slower, power of the primary and secondary equipment renovation invest ment is on the schedule. Ministry of Power, Govt. of India, has launched the Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (R-APD RP) in the XI Five year Plan. The objective of the programme is to reduce15%of the line loss in project areas, improve the management level of power grid.According to the above requirements, the application of electric power auto mation system is imperative. And as one of branches of substation automation system is computer system, which is integrated the computer technology, comm unication technology and network technology together. It implements the data c ollection, summary, control, communication and local monitoring function. Thro ugh the system communication and the network, it will be realized data sharin g and scheduling control. In power transmission and distribution, substation aut omation system will be conducive to enhance the level of power grid manage ment, monitor load effectively, schedule reasonably, reduce line losses, reduce a ccident treatment time.In this paper, sums up the basic function of substation automation system. Through the analysis of the status quo of Indian power system and the applica tion of substation automation, expounds the technical scheme, the design princi ple and system characteristics for the application of substation automation syste m in400kV Indore substation of India.System adopts the compounded mode of the RTU centralized collection an d decentralized collection, designs for the function. The independent AC/DC po wer supply system will provide the power input for automation equipment and signals. The new earthing point of SCADA system provides a good grounding for various devices and the signals. RTU will be installed in substations, whic h acquires all kinds of data of the substation, and transmits the data to the co ntrol center and local data monitoring system, at the same time also can accep t the command from the control center and local data monitoring system, contr ol substation equipment. Local data monitoring system will be completed the f unction of real-time data acquisition, data processing, real-time monitoring, the protection relay management, information storage, and automatic reports, realize s the substation automation.
