With the development of society, the demand of energy is growing rapidly. But fossilenergy as the main current of energies is depleted gradually. Therefore the environmentfriendly renewable energy gains extensive attention for its recycling, widely distributedand easily developed. Meanwhile, family as the minimum energy consumption unit in thefield of energy consumption, the enormous quantity of families enlarge their proportion ofthe whole energy consumption, and the proportion is keeping increasing. If consumersmake use of renewable energy efficiently, they will reduce the family energy consumptionand cost as well as the dependence on the power grid. Besides, the efficient energyconsumption will also achieve energy conservation and emission reduction. The blooming development of smart home brings fine household appliancemanagement for consumers, attracting attention widely of lots of researchers on the smarthome energy management system. In this paper, we firstly introduce the significance ofresearch and summarize the latest development and research of the existing smart homeenergy management system. Then, we design a ZigBee-based smart home energymanagement system (SHEMS). It adopts CC2530with low power consumption and easilynetworking, which is a true system-on-chip (SoC) solution for ZigBee applicationsmanufactured by Texas Instruments, to build the wireless home area sensor network. It isable to collect environment information and control household appliances. Then, across-platform Web Services Apache AXIS2is applied to provide the Web ApplicationProgramming Interface (API) in order that various clients are able to access and controlhousehold appliances remotely. Then, we build a semi-physical simulation of smart homeenergy management system through simulating the energy consumption mode of commonappliances on both software and hardware platforms. Based on the real-time pricing ofelectricity and availability of renewable energy, we design an energy management unit(EMU) which can dynamically switch the working mode of appliances according to theenergy scheduling mechanism. Besides, an Android based application is also developedwhich allows consumers to remotely access and control household appliances.System evaluations turn out the system is able to save average daily15.8%electricityconsumption and22%electricity bill as well as improve27.9%utilization of renewable energy. Besides, the system has a well stable, reliable and real-time performance.
