With the development of the society, road traffic plays an increasingly important role in the economic construction. And more and more people pay attention to the impact of adverse weather conditions on road traffic safety. Domestic road weather monitoring system is only applied in a small amount of highway, and its information is not comprehensive. The road weather monitoring system for ordinary roads and remote mountainous is still in the blank stage.To solve the above problem, this paper proposed a road conditions monitoring and traffic accident prevention system. The system can automatically acquire not only the weather such as visibility, road conditions, temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, which have greater impacts on traffic safety, but also the image information of the road conditions. Weather stations and the image monitoring nodes are connected through the wireless sensor network. The system has the functions of manual acquisition, timing acquisition, abnormal event reporting and so on.This paper summarizes the author’s work, and it is mainly about two parts of the road conditions monitoring and traffic accident prevention system:design of the weather station and development of the control center software. And the design of the weather station can be divided into three areas:the determination of the weather monitoring system solutions, software and hardware design of the weather station, and software and hardware design of wireless sensor network.(1) This paper systematically analyzes the deficiencies of the existing weather information acquisition system. And according to the technical requirements, this paper presents a remote unattended mobile smart weather information acquisition system which blends of wireless sensor networks technology,3G network technology, Ethernet technology, embedded technology, and solar-powered technology.(2) The weather station adopts the low-power microcontroller MSP430F149to acquire the weather information. And it is powered by solar cells and batteries. The system supports three ways of data upload: manual acquisition, timing acquisition and bad weather alarm.(3) Wireless sensor network node machine adopts the ADF7020-1as the RF chip to receive and send data, and it uses low-power processor LPC2134as the microprocessor to drive the RF chip. This paper also designed and implemented a heterogeneous uplink and downlink self-organizing routing protocol which has a strong robustness.(4) The control center software is based on the Visual Studio development. The function of the software contains real-time weather data receiving, weather stations management, weather information quering and storing, and bad weather information dissemination.The station, with high maneuverability, is powered by solar cells and batteries. The weather information is transmitted through the wireless network. The layout of the station is not restricted by the wire network and cable. Weather stations and the image monitoring nodes are connected through the wireless sensor network. Front-end will alarm when an exception occurs. The information of image and weather that is sent to the management center will provide a valid basis for the prevention of road traffic accident. The system has a good prospect of application and promotion.
