The manufacturing quality of BIW significantly affects the performance of wholevehicle and plays an important role on the market competition. The quality, to a greatextent, represents the development level of a country’s manufacturing technology.Therefore, the study of quality control of BIW is always the important content on carbody simultaneous engineering(SE). Because of the limitation of economy andtechnology at home, few research in the aspect was done, also lack of the engineeringpractice for reference and practical experience for accumulation, so compared withinternational advanced level, it still exists a large gap.The paper was carried out based on the above context. Learning from the literatureabout quality control theory of body at home and abroad, a reasonable and effectivemethod of welding quality control was proposed. With the help of professionalsoftwares, the paper focused on the design and optimization of welding location datum,and achieved the ultimate goal of improving the welding quality of body.The main content of the paper is the research of the welding quality of side body.First, the structure of side body and the welding process was discussed, and thestructure, feature and design of the side body welding fixture were studied especially.Secondly, the sources of the welding quality related factors were found by analyzing thewelding process. At the same time the welding error transfer model for side body wasestablished and the calculation method of welding error was concluded and also verifiedupon an example. Then, the methods of welding quality control were proposed based onthose factors, and the design theories on the location datum were introduced, throughestablishing the criteria for design of the welding location datum, the goal was achieved.Finally, an optimization design method for the welding location datum was introducedby means of genetic algorithm. And the whole optimization process for side body wasestablished. It was verified that the method was an effective way of achieving thereasonable layout of the location datum, decreasing error and improving the weldingquality.
