Traffic congestion causes going out inconvenient, traffic accidents, air pollution and other social problems which became an inevitable practical problem in urban developing. Thus, traffic problems limit the healthy development of a city. It proved that effectively using resources and digging potential in existing traffic to plan control and manage the traffic under advanced traffic theory by practical experience and lessons of urban developing. Modern traffic flow theory is developing under this background. Since1980s, Cellular automata traffic flow model have fast favored traffic scholar and engineer by simple rule, easy expand and high computing efficiency. This article mainly research the theory and application of cellular automata, which directs at the characteristic of Chinese urban backbone traffic congestion, using the cellular automata theory, modeling and analyzing around car following and crossroads congestion.After reading many domestic and overseas relative articles, I found that the theory research of Cellular automata traffic flow model which solving the urban traffic jam is poor than practical research and this will be the key point of this article, which includes:(1) Under cellular automata theory, making the evolution rule of cellular automata by vehicle athletic transformation in urban road traffic flow, setting up the urban road traffic flow simulation model base on Cellular Automata Theory, setting parameters, like the length of cellular and maximum speed;(2) Setting up Two-dimensional one-way traffic flow simulation model, researching the application of cellular automata in urban road traffic, designing the vehicle operating rules base on cellular automata theory which includes the rules of road traffic flow and plane’s cross intersection traffic flow;(3) Using MATLAB programming, realize the simulation of Two-dimensional one-way traffic flow model. The result conforms to the characteristic of real traffic flow, which is an ideal result;(4) Analyzing and discussing the result from simulation of traffic flow model this article suggested which apply to the actual urban road. It fully shows that the cellular automata having extensive applied foreground in transportation.
