| Republic of China was a period of Chinese political and cultural transformation, and southern Fujian buildings threw away the traditionally formed architectural styles with the combination of Chinese and western elements and of the ancient and the modern at that time, which could’t be ignored in the history of Chinese architecture. However, at the late of Republic of China, the Japanese invasion and Anti-Japanese War brought the transportation restriction and shortage of materials, which resulted in the less large-scale construction activities and fewer representative buildings, thus the research on the southern Fujian buildings at the late of Republic of China is weak.This paper uses Yongchun Lee’s Grand Courtyard, found in1942, as the case example to study the southern Fujian architectural decoration at the late Republic of China, and then to further explore the decorative art characteristics of residential buildings in southern Fujian region at such period. Through its systematic exposition and analysis, this paper provides the better understanding for era artistic features of the collision of the Chinese and western culture and the ancient and modern elements reflected on the modern southern Fujian buildings.On the basis of the fieldwork, through a large number of image acquisition and investigation of the relevant information, with the basic theory and research methods of artistics, architectonics, sociology, iconology and other subject and from the perspective of historical background, component shapes, craft techniques, artistic style, religious influence, era characteristics and other elements, this paper focuses on the decorative techniques, themes and artistic features of Lee’s Grand Courtyard and intends to throw light on the future research on the southern Fujian buildings in the period of the Republic of China. |
