The total capacity of power grid is increasing with constant development of Chinese economy. Therefore, a new monitoring method which could reflect the dynamic states of power grid is necessary for power grid management department. Based on this new method, the power grid dynamic security pre-warning system which include EMS and PMU device could be built to achieve the requirement of security analysis and foretelling.The theory of PMU and real-time monitoringsystem are introduced by power academics to achieve this target. Basically, PMU device are installed in important power stations and substations to construct the power grid dynamic security pre-warning system. By using this system, the power dispatch center could enhance the ability of monitoring and analysis the dynamic states of power grid.This paper gives a detailed discuss and research of the principle, benefits, functions and application. The main points are shown as below:PMU Algorithmic of Wide Area Measurement;The instruction of benefits and function of PMU device;As power plant for example,the instruction of design and technical requirement of PMU system;The structureand elements of PMU system;The interface, operating system and Functions Realization of PMU system;The detailed analysis of the PMU application in projects and solution of problems;Furthermore, this paper makes a comparison of PMU technology and SCADA in EMS system. The comparison shows PMU technology performs better in quickly troubleshooting, capturing the Low-frequency Oscillation of power grid, real-time measurement of Wide Area Measurement and analysis of dynamic states and safety cell of power generator.
