With the constant growth of cargo throughput along the national coastline, fire risks have been increasing in recent years. Severe losses would be brought about in case of a fire disaster Large fire-fighting ships could effectively prevent fire from spreading along the coastline, and meanwhile provide disaster rescue in shoal waters as well as search and rescue on the beach. Given the enhanced needs for fire-fighting ships, the governments at all levels have offered strong support to the design of fire-fighting ships.Required by the functional needs, fire-fighting ships should have such performance features as fire control and rapidity and turning ability, which demands for good model selection of engine room facilities. Meanwhile, it is particularly important to have reasonable layout of engine room, as it matters the usage and economic performance of ships. For designers, it is very significant to optimize the layout of facilities in the engine room of fire-fighting ships. Due to the limitation of2D drawings, this paper uses CATIA for rapid3D modeling based on the instance of NO.1Dalian Fire-fighting Ship, and then conducts optimal design on the placement of engine room facilities. This paper consists of the following contents:I. To review thoroughly on related standards and statistics and then conclude on the layout principals for major facilities in the engine room of ships from different perspectives.II. To discuss on how to extract information of data points from AUTOCAD ship-lines rapidly and import it into CATIA. The paper chooses to extract data through second exploiting on AUTOCAD ship-lines after introducing and comparing several different solutions, and finally achieve rapid development of ship hull under CARTIA3D environment.III. Parametric modeling of part of ship structures and facilities. The paper accomplishes the development of simplified modeling of supernatant construction of ship hull and simplified modeling of major facilities of engine room through the designing platform of CARTIA by combing relevant technologies of knowledge engineering and setting parameters with formula editor.IV. To develop mathematic modeling on the optimal layout of the engine room of No.1Dalian Fire-fighting Ship, then initially accomplish the layout design of major facilities in the engine room of No.1Dalian Fire-fighting Ship with the results of comprehensive genetic algorithm and relevant layout principals, and import it into3D models through the load module of CATIA.
