Suzhou is an old city with 2500 years history, which has obtained obvious achievements in protecting city pattern as well as these historic and cultural architectures. However, the urban spatial form, body content of old city’s heritage, is suffering from gradual destruction as some of Suzhou’s historic characteristics have been under vanishing. Some seemingly ordinary and obsolete alleys, residences and commercial streets in the city have taken on a new look under the large-scale reconstruction process which makes people’s memory dwell on the past. The future of Suzhou city is becoming obscure and confused. This thesis firstly analyses the background, traced the concept of city’s spatial form and urban texture, presenting that the original historic city texture belongs to the spatial location-relation permutation formed under the updating process of historical background and evolution. And then, based on Suzhou old city’s cultural and geographical background, historical evolution, as well as history of city construction, I’ll use three sections to intuitively represent Suzhou old city’s spatial form analyze from urban structural texture to urban spatial texture, including edge space, river and road structure, surface texture shape, courtyard space conformation, space feature of street and alley, etc, summarize the evolution law about old city’s urban spatial form, including factors which will affect the old city’s spatial form. Finally, based on the current situation, this thesis also presented optimizing strategies of recovering and controlling from two urban texture aspects, searching for the most appropriate methods to protect and extend the spatial form of historic urban area.
