With the economic and technological development, the developmental speed of high-rise building structures increase year by year, frame-shear wall structure is a widely used structure in high-rise buildings. However, the number and the arrangement of shear walls embody the economic performance and the seismic performance of frame-shear wall structures. This paper mainly researches on the optimal quantity and reasonable arrangement of shear walls in frame-shear wall structures. Based on the principle of the continuous analysis of interactive frame-shear wall structures, a series of formulas of optimal quantity of shear walls for rigid connection system considering the shear deformation effects of shear wall were deduced, and compare them to formulas of hinged connection system and rigid connection system both of which not consider the shear deformation effects of shear wall. The similarities and differences of these three systems in determining the optimal quantity of shear walls were analyzed. The optimal quantity of shear walls are discussed through examples, showing the effects of the shear deformation of shear wall and the constrained stiffness of connecting beam on it. Some conclusions are summarized that the effects of the shear deformation on the optimal quantity of the shear walls are less significant than the constrained stiffness. The optimal quantity of shear walls for rigid connection system considering the shear deformation effects of shear wall is less than the other two systems, which makes structures more economic and reasonable under the premise of safety. Based on the continuous principle of the cooperative work of frame-shear wall structures, a simplified method, taking shear deformation of shear walls into account, was deduced to calculate the maximum story drift of frame-shear wall structures for rigid connection system. A procedure and corresponding constraint condition, which was used to distinguish the optimal arrangement of shear walls in frame-shear wall structures, were presented. For frame-shear wall structures, this paper used Midas software to establish multiple models and analysis combining with practical engineering example. An important conclusion is drawed that shear walls should be arranged in the periphery and in the short side direction of structures.
