Transmission line condition-based maintenance and on-line monitoring technology are the feasibility and necessity require of the safe operation of the power grid and increasing transmission capacity. The responsibility of transmission line facilities is transmission and distribution of electric energy. It is characterized by quantity, large area, long lines, bad environment and huge external influence. At the same time, in recent years, the rapid development of the transmission grid, but also makes more inadequate with human and material resources. As such, the study about transmission line condition-based maintenance and on-line monitoring devices is very meaningful. This paper describes the concept and significance of transmission line maintenance, explains the requirements and basic principles of maintenance, and analyzes the projects and technical support of transmission line condition monitoring. Then we analyzes the structure and function of power transmission lines, and study the transmission line monitoring technology from insulator pollution monitoring, lightning-line monitoring, transmission line environmental monitoring, transmission line breeze vibration monitoring and transmission line video surveillance. Finally, we study the maintenance mode of transmission line maintenance and the functional description of transmission line. Transmission line on-line monitoring device includes electrical wiring insulation monitoring, mechanics monitoring, line environmental monitoring, etc. The research direction includes insulator pollution monitoring, transmission line icing monitoring and overhead high-voltage transmission line inspection robot. Finally, we made some good suggestion.
