| As the physical entity and the ideal state of gardens described in poems and paintings of Wang Wei, known as Buddha of Poems, Wangchuan Villa bears a strong Buddhist significance in regard to the site selection, the distribution of scenic spots and the conveying of the artistic conception. Based on the understanding of the ideological course, philosophical basis, aesthetical ideal, and aesthetical reflection of Zen, an analysis is drawn that the primary aesthetical reflection in Wangchuan Villa involves the landscape conception on ubiquitous Tao, the Buddhist charm in refined and leisurely poems and paintings, and the inward beauty of artistic conception. By briefly introducing Wangchuan Villa, studying the artistic conception of Buddhism, and reviewing Wang Wei’s poems, we come to the conclusion that the artistic conception of Buddhism conveyed by Wangchuan Villa includes the void conception, or Form is void, and void is form. It’s hard to distinguish them, the naturalness conception, or the inner contentment, the perfection conception, or the great wisdom of the round mirror, the transcendency conception, or the leisurely and carefree clouds have no fixed abode, and the exquisiteness conception, or a winding path leads to quiet seclusion. As telling form from void is hard, the artistic Buddhist conception of gardens cannot be achieved without the physical forms of gardens. It can only be created and achieved by the objective images in gardens. By categorizing and integrating the garden images in the poems and essays, we may conclude that the means of creating an artistic conception are quite many. The artistic conception of Buddhism can be created by objects in gardens like clouds, water, mountains, the moon, plants and animals, by the elegant and secluded sceneries of gardens, by the sounds of gardens in serenity, by the faint fragrance of gardens, and by the seclusion achieved by space shift and contrast. The study shows that Wang Wei, shaped by Zen Buddhism, left a deep Buddhist mark on Wangchuan Villa, the Wonderland of Gardens, in regard to the aesthetical reflection, the artistic conception of gardens and the means of creating an artistic conception. Besides, the Buddhist significance also made its presence in his poems and essays about Wangchuan. |
