In recent years, with the global energy shortage and environmental pollution, how to solve the problem of energy saving and emission reduction has become a pressing matter of the moment of the shipping industry. Wind propulsion on-ce again returned to the sight line of people for it’s no pollution and high fuel quantity. Ships utilize the wind energy by sail for auxiliary propulsion is called sail assisted technology, and security issues is a significant aspect that cannot be ignored for it, so the strength analysis of sail assisted ship and the design opti-mization of layout of sail according to it has significance for the practicability of sail assisted technology and sail assisted ship design.In this paper, a 50000DWT offshore bulk cargo ship "Penglong" is decided to use as the target ship, the main research contents are:Design the sail for the ship, use wind tunnel test for its normal force coefficient, analysis and calculate the load of sails, preliminary put forward two kinds of layout scheme of single/ double sail; Using MSC.Patran/Nastran element software, select the main compo-nent part of the target ship cabin area where installed sail for the establishment of three-dimensional finite element model; Then, according to the requirements of <The rules for the construction of sea going ships>(2014) of the China classi-fication society, choose calculation conditions and exert boundary conditions, cal-culate the load (the residual problem is considered in sail load calculation), then the ship structure is analyzed by finite element direct calculation, and the stren-gth check is carried out according to the standard; Next, optimize the layout of the sails based on the strength analysis, and then determine the final sail layout scheme for Penglong vessel.According to the strength check, the ship strength of two layout schemes both are comply with the requirements, the main influence area of sail to hull struct-ure is deck. And the stress margin of the single-sail layout scheme is above 7%, in the other hands the stress margin of the double-sail layout scheme is up to 8%, so the double-sail layout scheme is relatively safe. According to the strength analysis results, make an optimization for the double-sail layout scheme by inc-reasing the sails away from the hull longitudinal axis distance. After that the str-ess margin is up to 19% and the layout of sail for Penglong vessel tends to be improved and perfect, and it have a directive function for the layout of sail for Penglong vessel.
