With the production demands of the port and the development trend of the shipping, the amount of large-scale vessels has increased rapidly, so the practice of one high tide for entering only one large vessel has not met the production demands of ports. This can be solved by a joint fleet of large-scale vessels which sails in the fairway during the same high sea level, and it is also one of the effective ways to improve the efficiency of port operation. However, formation into the port for large-scale vessels will be effected by many factors such as safety space between vessels, tide, fairway conditions and emergency demands.As one of the major ports along the coast of the People’s Republic of China, Rizhao Port, after 20 years’construction, has developed from an initial single energy output port into a comprehensive one, and is becoming a professional, multi-functional and modern port. With the rapid development of the national economy of the hinterland, the throughput of Rizhao Port will surely continue to grow rapidly.Rizhao Port has been divided into two harbor districts:Shijiu harbour district and Lanshan harbor district. At present, several large-scale berths have been put into use successively in the middle part of Lanshan harbor district, including one 150000-ton bulk terminal, one 300000-ton ore terminal and two 300000-ton crude oil wharfs. After the construction of the berths, all vessels berthing and unberthing above terminals share one same deepwater channel, and what’s more, all large bulk carriers and 300000-ton oil tankers should navigate in the channel during high tide period because of the limit of the depth and tide, the efficiency of port operation is effected badly. Thus, the solution for formation into the port of the large-scale vessels is very necessary, which will be helpful for the improvement of the waterway through ability, the safety of marine navigation and the economic benefits of the port.This article will discuss the influencing factors of the large-scale vessel fleet entering the channel on the extensive literature and the investigation on the port. The article focuses on formation into the port for large-scale vessels in the Shihua deepwater channel as an example, based on the traditional Car-following Theory, analysis on the safe spacing of ships before and after, and determine the feasibility judgment Mathematical Model of the large-scale vessel fleet entering the channel, through the mathematical analysis, combing with the data of the Lanshan port navigation environment. The results can be used to provide technical reference for China MSA, Pilot, safety management and production of the port.
