With the rapid development of power tools and home appliances intelligence, the demand for single-phase series motor is increasing constantly. In this paper, the single-phase series motor for a food mixer was analyzed, including the motor magnetic circuit performance computation, magnetic field analysis and the optimal design, the commutation spark factor and radial forces computation and so on.First, the structure and principles of single-phase series motor were presented and the performance of the motor was calculated using an equivalent circuit method. The correctness of the theoretical calculations was verified by the measured results. In addition, the effects of the motor performance were analyzed in detail by varying the parameters on the electrical properties. For its low efficiency, a quasi-Newton method was used to optimize the efficiency of the motor and the optimized structural and performance parameters were obtained. The two-dimensional(2D) model and the equivalent circuit were constructed by the Ansoft software and the startup process and the iron losses were analyzed using a 2D finite element method(FEM). Besides, in order to verify the correctness of the computation results by the 2D FEM, a three-dimensional(3D) FEM was used to obtain the distribution of iron losses and the performance parameters of the motor. The performance parameters of the motor including the current, torque, the input and output power and efficiency were also obtained by the prototype test. The correctness of the finite element method was verified by the results of the 2D and 3D FEM. For the commutation spark problems, the additional commutation current was calculated and the spark factor was obtained to determine the spark level. The radial force of the motor was calculated using the Maxwell stress tensor method and the operating characteristics and mechanical characteristics of the motor were calculated and compared with the measured results.
