The growing need for imports and exports in China has made increasingly higher demands on port handling capacity. Port hoisting equipment has evolved into a significant onshore facility for port handling due to its advantages such as huge lifting capacity, flexibility and high working efficiency. As defined by national regulations, quayside container crane is one of the eight types of special equipment, which often encounters the safety problems because of the huge system, sophisticated structure, hostile working environment, diverse operating conditions, high use frequency, and overlong service time. In case any safety problem happens to the quayside container crane: at best, there will be some negative influence, including lower working efficiency, destruction or deformation of the hoisted articles, and destruction or scrapping of the crane itself; at worst, the irreparable consequences such as death may be triggered. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain the quayside container crane and monitor its operating conditions regularly in order to avoid risks. Due to the enormous structure of quayside container crane, there is a lack of sufficient ability to conduct maintenance and monitoring, and the probability that every part breaks down may vary. In this paper, efforts are spent in identifying the major hazard sources of quayside container crane and rectifying the existing safety measures in accordance with the results of risk evaluation so as to prevent accidents efficiently. Below are the research focuses:(1) Firstly, energy is devoted to gaining an insight into the organizational structure, operating principle, manufacturing safety, and maintenance and monitoring of quayside container crane, collecting and analyzing the accident cases of quayside container crane in recent years, and finding out the frequently occurring accidents of quayside container crane and the hazard sources leading to these accidents.(2) Secondly, the accident tree of quayside container crane is constructed by dint of accident tree analysis to analyze the safety tree of the quayside container crane and detect the major hazard sources; then, according to the order of importance, the elementary accident set that exercises a huge influence on the safety is figured out.(3) In the light of the analysis result about hazard source, a comprehensive and efficient safety evaluation system of quayside container crane that conducts healthy monitoring is built to calculate the proper weight that accident comparison matrix assigns to different indices as well as to grade the overall safety of the quayside container crane by means of fuzzy comprehensive evaluation.(4) Finally, the evaluation method of quayside container crane is used for J36 series for verification purpose. With the original data by field measurement,and used the method to get the safety assessment scores, then give the safety measures by the result. The feasibility of the method has been proved by the experiment.
