Masonry structure is widely used in rural areas in China. However, masonry structure of countryside is severely damaged in previous earthquake. The destruction of masonry structures has caused huge casualties and severe economic losses. So, it has important theoretical and practical value to study and evaluate the seismic capacity of masonry buildings in rural areas.This paper analyses the seismic capacity of masonry structure by the finite element software ABAQUS, base on the investigation of the current situation of masonry structure in rural areas. Then a evaluation method of seismic capacity of masonry structure is suggested in this paper.Firstly, the characteristic and the situation of he seismic capacity of masonry structure in rural areas is summarized, base on the security investigation of masonry structures of Guanzhong area. And the main problems are presented. The theoretical basis of numerical simulation is identified by systematically analyzing the constitutive relationship of masonry, concrete and rebar.Secondly, five representative masonry structure are established by using the finite element software ABAQUS. Model analysis of five different models are carried out separately, then it’s found that the period of masonry structure model with ring beams and structural columns is obviously smaller than that of the unconstrained masonry structure model. It’s also found that the period of masonry structure model with rings beams is close to that of the unconstrained masonry structure model. It’s suggested that it’s important to set the ring beam and constructional column at the same time.Thirdly, two actual recorded and one artificial seismic wave are chosen. They are applied to five masonry structure models at 6 degree, 7degree and 8 degree of frequently occurred earthquake and rarely occurred earthquake. Then the seismic performance level and the damage classes of five typical masonry structure are determined by analyzing the reaction of the inter-story displacement angle and damage degree.At last, the evaluation method of seismic capacity of masonry structure is suggested by combining the inter-story displacement angle and the area percentage of DAMAGET to dual control indicator. It can accurate evaluate the state of the seismic performance of masonry structure in rural areas. It also can provide a theoretical basis for the reinforcing and renovation of the beautiful countryside.
