Linear city refering to the urban morphology is limited to natural terrain which extending along the mountains and rivers, the most construction land of it is valley basin, and built-up area land has been or will present linear distribution. In addition to terrain, the city extends along the axial direction of the traffic will also form a linear city. Due to the effects of external roads and railway traffic arteries, China’s inland cities are developed into linear layout along the axis of the transportation routes. While many southern cities turn into onside linear shaped structure which are affected by the shipping line. China has a certain number of linear city, about 43, covers different scale, such as Shenzhen, Lanzhou, Jinan, Baoji, Jilin, Pingliang, Tongchuan, Yan’an, Zhenjiang etc.Linear city extends along the axial direction of the traffic with its flow is smooth and simple, when compared with other forms of city. But with the expansion of the city scale and the increase of population, the traffic load becomes larger, and road resources are more difficult because the city is subject to terrain, resulting in overall network operating results are poor, traffic congestion is serious which restricting the development of linear city.In this paper, the physical characteristics of the linear city was studied, and the evolution of its space and traffic characteristics were put forward. After that, the traffic problems of linear city were analyzed. Based on "bus priority" strategy, public transportation patterns of linear city were studied, and an evaluation choice model based on AHP and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model were proposed.(1) The spatial form of linear city evolves gradually under the coordination process of functional layout and transportation system, combined by the interaction between urban spatial form and urban transportation. This paper analyses the spatial evolution and transportation characteristic of linear city with different scales and different stages. Finally the dynamic interaction between urban spatial form and urban transportation is discussed.(2) Traffic characteristics of linear city are analyzed by using a case study, which contains Resident Trip Characteristics, Network Characteristics, Traffic Flow characteristics. Transport performance quality indicators and influence factors of spatial form are proposed based on traffic characteristics analysis.(3) Analysis the adaptability between spatial form and public transportation pattern of linear city, study the influence factors of public transportation patterns, and at last propose an evaluation choice model based on AHP and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model.(4) Take Jilin as an example and combine its transportation characteristics, the model of public transportation development is studied based on the above evaluation model.
