Fuel tank internal part is an important component in a vehicle fuel system which directly affects the vibration and noise level, and further determines the performance of the vehicle. Strict control of the internal part molding quality is a key factor to ensure the manufacturing quality and production efficiency in fuel tank industry. Therefore, it is of great significance in engineering to measure the molding and assembly parameters of an internal part. However, in the current domestic and abroad practice, a destructive method with specially designed pattern is widely used with its accuracy not high and efficiency quite low. Besides, it would cause an irreversible waste of samples. To solve the above problems, a research on new technologies is necessary to be conducted.Technology of internal part inspection based on laser scanning and multi-binocular stereo vision is researched. A mini 3D laser scanner can be located in the fuel tank and grab the laser images of the targeted area by the multi-binocular stereo system. With the calibration data and standard status point cloud, the measurement system could reconstruct the point cloud of internal part and calculate the key molding parameters via various point cloud processing algorithms including point cloud filtering, segmentation, registration and feature extraction. This method could achieve a rapid and precise measurement in non-destructive status.Based on the measurement prototype system, some measurement experiments were implemented. Through the results of these experiments, the measurement accuracy, repetitive accuracy and efficiency of the system are verified. Besides, we employed the device in a fuel tank plant and reached good results.
