Excitation system is an important factor in large turbo generator safe and reliable operation, and also plays a key role to the security operation of the grid. Excitation system can automatically adjust the excitation current based on the terminal voltage changes, changes of load current, and power factor of the generator to ensure the stability of the power system.Currently, with the growing electricity requirement, the capacity of the power system is also gradually increasing, so some new problems appear in the power system and generator set, for example, low frequency oscillation occurs due to the inadequate damping system, sub-synchronous oscillations of shaft torsional vibrations are because of the long distance transmission lines of series capacitor compensation. In addition, the system less reactive power insufficiency or reactive power balance destruction causes the collapse of the voltage, all of which threaten the stability of the power system. For generators, the limitations of the existing excitation system has become increasingly prominent with the increasing capacity and current, so there liability and stability of the excitation system require higher standard.Given the close relationship between excitation system and power system stability, and the current issues of generator excitation system, thus effectively improving the functionality and performance of the excitation system excitation power unit, and overcoming the technical bottleneck of the generator excitation way are important means of these problems. This article research, solve and break through the bottleneck problems of the current generator excitation mode which affect the grid stability, based on the characteristics of the system itself and the excitation power plant excitation system failures, so that the generator excitation system can play a greater role in the generator and grid.
