Hydraulic excavators, which are very important construction machine, play a significant role in many earthwork applications, such as mining, road constructions, national defense constructions, agricultural and water conservancy utilizations. As the rapid economic growth of our nation and the increasing invest on infrastructure, the role of hydraulic excavators in the modernization constructions is more important. So, it is of vital and profound significance for our country’s modernization to make continually reform and innovation on hydraulic excavators.Productivity is one of the main technical performance indicators for hydraulic excavators and determines the economic profits of engineering companies. The cycling working time of hydraulic excavators was optimized here, based on the research of digging performance and real requirements of this product. The research mainly contains the following aspects.① Structural styles of backhoe hydraulic excavators’ working device were concluded, after analyzing its working characters. Based on kinematics and mechanics models of backhoe hydraulic excavators, mathematical models of working device joint point’s coordinates and whole machine’s digging force were built.② After experiments on real time performance, characters and disciplines of every working cycle were got, based on analysis for every step of the typical working cycle and platform’s rotation process. Framework modeling for cycling working time of backhoe hydraulic excavators and the time for platform rotating were preliminarily decided.③ Functions for pressure and length of each active hydraulic cylinder based on boom angle, bucket rod angle, digging bucket angle were constructed. Meanwhile, the mathematical model of cycling working time of hydraulic excavators was established. And software aiming at computing the cycling working time was made under the VB programming environment and compared with data from the real time experiments.④ Multiple objective optimizations were completed, based on the analysis of its productivity for backhoe hydraulic excavators. Cycle working time is the main optimization objective and digging performance is the secondary objective, with design variable from working device mechanism and constraints from kinematics and mechanics basis. For multiple objective occasions, optimization software was programmed under the VB programming environment, in which genetic algorithm was adopted. The results from analyzing shows that productivity and digging performance of backhoe hydraulic excavators were both enhanced on some degree. And they are advisable for design of this kind of backhoe hydraulic excavators.
