The fierce market competition requires enterprise quickly meet, or even to direct the demand of market. Because the long period and high cost of the product development, more and more enterprise are convinced to the importance of the improving and administration of CEPDP(Concurrent Engineering Product Development Process).Therefore, it is significant to administrate product development process and improve the capability which enterprises can rapidly respond to the market in order to improve the competition of the enterprise.On the basis of the analysis of the status of muffler design and development, the paper research on contemporary automotive industry muffler design and development process and build out a design and development platform supporting the rapid design of muffler and the collaborative work between designers. Main content of the paper include:(1)The existing processes of muffler design and development was analyzed and it was optimized with the advanced ideas of the product development process management (Concurrent Engineering, Business Process Reengineering and Project Management) in order to change the after control to the pre-control and short the product development period.(2) A muffler comprehensive performance evaluation system was established. It determined the index weight values of muffler performances, achieved quantitative expression.of multiple indicators of performances in order to avoid the problems of a single indicator and support the rapid selection of the muffler structure. Finally the operability and feasibility of evaluation systems has been verified through an example.(3) A system supporting the collaborative work of muffler design and development was constructed and it achieved functions including workflow management, project management and task management. Project management was achieved with the Gantt chart,the schedule control table and tracking Gantt chart. Task management was achieved based on role permissions set.(4) Based on the relational database MySQL development environment, a muffler design and development of database system supporting muffler rapid design and development and cell technology integrated was built. The system storages and manages product data, provides the best mother reference for product structure optimization and deformation design and support designers to interact and data transmission during the collaborative development process.(5) A muffler design development platform based on WEB was developed with the using of PHP, SQL and MATLAB. It supported designers in distributed collaborative design and development, guaranteed information sharing and exchange smoothly, achieved data management and comprehensive performance evaluation.There are two innovations involved in the article:(1) Based on engineering database, a platform supporting muffler collaborative design and development was built. There were few studies of the same functional platform in the current literature.(2) The introduction of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to determine the affect weights of the comprehensive evaluation indicators is an innovative in similar studies.
