Nowadays, the industrial systems become more and more complex with a lot of variables to be controlled. In order to ensure good performances both for each component and the global system, complex structure with multiple controllers are designed and more control parameters waiting to be tuned, making it laborious to tune them manually. However, there is no existing methodology to design the control structure and tune the control parameters systematically. The current methods are more based on experience and trial-and-error, which is laborious and inefficient. What is more, it is limited by the interdependencies between the controllers. Thus, there should be a methodology which can:Identify the relations between the subsystems and design the control structure correspondingly;Figure out the contribution of the controller parameters to the dynamics of the system and tune the controllers systematically. In this paper, Energetic Macroscopic Representation(EMR) and Modal Analysis are combined to design the controller of the modern system and tune the controller parameters.EMR and inversion-based control strategy are used to design the controller structure. Modal Analysis are used to tune the controller parameters. To illustrate this methodology, it takes the control of grid-side VSC as an example to illustrate and verify this methodology. This methodology can be exploited to more complex system employing control structure with more than three loops and to domains other than electrical engineering. It is a universal methodology to systems which are linear or can be linearized at the equilibrium point. It can be applied to more complex systems and domains other than electrical network.
