“Production Under Xiang”(PUX in abbreviation, and Xiang, a Chinese classical philosophy definition of the Profound Image of Universe),is a technological concept based on Chinese ancient arithmetic-mathematic system, and the indispensable primary notion the logic and forming of Chinese classical philosophy and science system.PUX, first raised in《Book of Changes, Xi Hexagram》, were also elaborated as the ideology basis of production in other classical technology documents such as《The Artificers’ Record》,《Rules of Building》,《The Song Planetarium Reconstruction Principles》,《Dream Pool Essays》,and 《Heavenly Creations》. Furthermore by studying the original concept of Xiang, from the invention of primal hexagrams to the six-types methodology of creation of Chinese characters, it all stepped from a semasiography-deduction-based logic system. Starting from such a system, almost all scientific theories of yin-yang arithmetic, mathematics, astronautics, calendrical science, temperament, military, medical science, etc. were actually developed from the deductive inference of corresponding Xiang. Therefore in the light of PUX, probes into traditional building techniques may offer a more precise comprehension of the ancient builders’ original technical intention, architecture forms and motives of technical contents. This thesis expatiated on six main points as follows: 1, evolution of PUX concept and textual research, 2, elaboration the concept of Xiang and its arithmetic-mathematic system background, 3, the technical logic behind semasiography-based PUX notion, and PUX practice in ancient production and related textual research, 4, textual research of Xiang’s impact over traditional architecture dimension and modulus and deductive methodology, 5, important building techniques such as forms of architectural scale, raising and depression, roofing structure, bucket arches, and trigger devices and associated relationship with the ration of Xiang, 6,conclusion and revelation: PUX’s profound impact over ancient building techniques and practice, revealing beyond the symbolic level, the overall connection with tradition arithmetic-mathematic system.
