Solar photovoltaic(PV) technology is becoming matured to have become one of the main sources of technically viable large-scale sustainable energy. The roof PV potential evaluation is not only critical for the energy designing and planning of actual projects, but also provides support for rooftop solar deployment decisions, and there is important practical significance for accommodating grid capacity and formulating future adaptive policies.For the lack of the quantitative analysis for the specific potential of large scale regions’ buildings at present, the research of rooftop solar PV potential assessment is proposed. Under the guidance of Songnian Li, GIS and ENVI technologies are used to gain the roof area of sample area and derive the relationship between population and roof area by extracting building contour of sample region. A assessment process of rooftop solar PV potential of Xuzhou has been adopted: on the basis of division of Xuzhou, roof area of sample area is obtained by using ENVI, then the relationship between the roof area and population is derived, total available roof area and the solar radiation on the roof are calculated, solar radiation on rooftop is estimate, finally solar is converted into power energy output, thereby rooftop solar photovoltaic potential evaluation is performed, this evaluation method is suitable for large-area rooftop solar PV deployment decision support, and process flow under study is also applicable to other cities with similar housing construction in China. the conclusions obtained as follows:(1) The relationship between roof area and population and available roof area. According to the scatter plots of Xuzhou rural and urban sample area, regression analysis is done. We can obtain a cubic relationship between the two and we can know that the total roof area of Xuzhou is 8.4×108 m2 combined with population data. According to the proportion of the available roof area, we can get that the roof area used to photovoltaic deployment is 1.0×108 m2.(2) Rooftop solar PV potential evaluation and emission reduction results. If the roof installs crystalline silicon solar photovoltaic panels, the annual energy production is 27480 GWh, the 86.3% of Xuzhou’s energy demand is met, while the use of coal can be reduced 10992 kt, carbon dioxide emissions 27397 kt, sulfur dioxide 824 kt, nitrogen oxides 412 kt, dust 7475 kt.(3) Rooftop solar photovoltaic power generation distribution of Xuzhou and map publishing. Drawing the distribution map of Xuzhou rooftop solar photovoltaic power generation, according to the distribution map, we can know that rooftop solar power production of Xuzhou downtown(Quanshan District, Yunlong District, Gulou District) as well as individual geographical unit is relatively high, most geographical units of the urban region and some of the rural region come second, and that most located in rural region and some in urban rank last. Using the Geo Server and HTML, we publish the photovoltaic power generation and emission reduction results of each geographical unit online.
