Textured surface, which is inspired by the nature evolution, has become an effective way of saving energy and reducing consumption for traditional industries based on its profound effect in superhydrophobicity and drag reduction. The effect of hydrodynamic lubrication in textured bearings was investigated in this paper, furthermore, elements such as cavitation, speed and structure parameters were also studied to achieve a better performance. In the first part of the work, a Computational Fluid Dynamic(CFD) model of a smooth surface journal bearing was developed to solve the oil film behavior, the pressure distribution shows an area with high negative pressure which is not compatible with engineering experience. Then the effects of cavitation was considered, the mixture model was settled in the multiphase flows model to get a more realistic numerical solution. In the second part of the work, for the convenience of mesh generation and numerical calculation, the journal bearing model was split into two slider bearings which is corresponding with the region of convergence and divergence. The convergent slider bearing is parallel with the main part of carrying capacity of the journal bearing, elements such as position, range, direction and structure parameters of the texture surface were investigated to enhance hydrodynamic lubrication characteristics. The same research approach was also performed on the divergent slider bearing, furthermore, the influence of textured surface on cavitation was considered. In the last part of the work, an extensive experimental work has been carried out. Textured surface machined by milling cutter on a internal face of a half bearing with a diameter of 60 mm, then the experiments was conducted on a test rig machine and data about the pressure and shear force have been collected. The experimental results show that at least within the speed and load settled in the experiments, the textured surface is beneficial to the bearing’s hydrodynamic lubrication performance, it can improve the load-carrying capacity and reduce the wall shear force as compared with the smooth surface.
